Why Speed Is Important?

All Vehicles have a fuel efficiency sweet spot, the speed at which fuel efficiency is optimized. This varies from vehicle to vehicle, the sweet spot typically falls between 50 and 80 km/h.

Fuel efficient driving stresses that you should avoid high speeds and follow the speed limit.Although this means that fuel efficiency may not be optimal at lower speeds, following speed limits on the highway will more than make up the difference.

Driving at 120 km/h rather than 100 km/h can increase fuel consumption by about 20 percent.

On a 25 km trip a vehicle driving at 120 km/h would arrive only 2.5 minutes earlier than a vehicle driving at 100 km/h.

On a 100 km trip driving 120 km/h would only get you there 10 minutes earlier.

Question to students:

Are the gains in travel time really worth the extra fuel costs and environmental emissions,or the potential for a traffic fine,or even a speed related collision? THE ANSWER IS NO!

A vehicle driving a 100 km at the speed of 120km/h can consume 2 litres more fuel than if it was driving 100 km/h. With gasoline prices in around $1.25 and $1.30 per litre, that's the equivalent of throwing a toonie and more out the window every hour!
